The Army and Navy L-3 Gibson Guitar Song

March 13, 2016

I was thinking recently about the time it takes to write a new Song, and there are probably as many answers to that question as there are Songs ! I have been working on the following Lyric for a good few years, and it's only just now taking shape. I am often asked about my old brown Gibson Guitar, and I have tried to ansswer those questions here in as accurate and truthful  way as I can. Here's the Lyric as she stands today, and I'm continuing working on the Melody. Hopefully, that won't take as long ......

The Gibson Army and Navy L-3

My Brother came up to my room,
With an old potato sack,
Your head was peeping from the top,
And your belly out the back,

It was fate that brought you to me,
For a price that seems so small,
A week's wages at that time,
From a Boy who went to war.

It was fate that brought you to me,
For a price that seems so small,
A week's wages at that time,
From a Boy who went to war.

Designed and built by craftsmen,
In nineteen forty-four,
From wood and glue In Kalamazoo,
For the Army and Navy Corps,
Bought, sold, and traded,
And travelled the whole World over,
Loved and loaned, then sold again,
To a Boy who went to War.

Yes, you've guessed, I'm a Guitar,
Seventy years old today,
And I've been through the Wars you know,
Well worn,along the way,
Europe, Korea and Vi-et-nam,
I brought some peace to the soul of man,
And made sweet music in the hands
Of a Boy who went to War.

There's so much music in you,
You've absorbed through the years,
Soaking in words and tunes
Of life and joy and tears,
Until you found the inspiration,
To sing the songs and share the lore,
To tell the stories and the truth,
About a Boy who went to War.

Before you came to me,
You were almost lost for good,
Blown to a thousand pieces,
Of shattered,splintered wood,
Repaired by loving hands,
You learned to live once more,
And find your voice, once again,
Like the boy who went to War.
